Pope Benedict arrived here in New York City, landing at Kennedy Airport earlier today. He’s shown here being greeted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg as Cardinal Edward Egan looks on. Later, in a speech at the United Nations, he said that “human rights — more than force or pragmatic politics — should be the basis for ending war and poverty.”  (Well, that sounds good…having been said so often.)

    Again, I’m afraid it will merely continue to sound good to well-meaning people, but fail to be acted upon by all. No pope could have appealed for justice and peace with the passion of John Paul II…but look at the world today.
