The weather here in NYC is doggedly hot and drearily hazy, imbued with persistent layers of stagnant humid air. Life is sluggish, through these hours of glaring suns and bleary moons, yet pulsating with restless motion. Days are longer and tempers quicker in suffocating hours and petulant streams of sweat and traffic. Today’s prediction is for more of the same, only intensified, and this Saturday afternoon is indeed the highlight of a heat wave that’s been afflicting us for the past week.
My wife and I huddle in the clammy coolness of our apartment, as the moribund whoosh and roar emanating from air conditioners and fans confine us to a forced, artificial atmosphere. We’re down to tank tops and shorts (Steffie, unlike me, 38 and beautiful even amid worst case scenarios) and comprise a possibly sexy yet hopelessly exhausted picture of wall-to-wall indifference: barely finished tasks, scattered clothing and remnants of quickly eaten meals echo with fatigue. Even Butterscotch, our famously lazy and self-assured cat, is a restless and frizzled ball of confusion; our lackadaisical attitudes only get on his nerves.
Summers are truly arriving earlier and staying later these days. The rumors and speculations of global warming and weather manipulation are topics of increased interest to many environmentalists and scientists. While the latter is usually written off as the pipe dreams of conspiracy theorists, the former has gained broader if often quivering support, its credibility often blurred by political burlesques and questionable experts. Unless everyone is totally delusional, the earth’s climate is dramatically changing (not How or Why, simply that it IS)…as if it’s reflecting the climate of our own political and social uncertainty.

Thankfully we don’t have such boiling weather so far. In such bad weather even the Air Conditioners don’t seem to help much but they are the only gadgets that let us survive. Someone described US’ weather as some fairy up in the heaven has left the oven open, and has totally forgotten about it. Well! your post very much proves that.
Btw I read the words ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ first, and then moved on to read post (I ended up scrolling a little too much), I thought you were going to write something on Floyd, and I was questioning myself that how could I miss this post.:)

If there’s an “oven” in existence it’s probably sitting on cities like this one situated along the nation’s northeastern coast. Lately, it’s almost impossible to survive without air conditioning. Along with this, and because of America’s economic situation, stores are increasingly uncomfortable places to be in during summer months because they’re lowering their thermostats; in supermarkets, many perishable items are spoiling more rapidly, too. These and other things are currently in the works.
Sorry about Pink Floyd; this All Posters ad refuses to be placed anywhere else, no matter what I do.
As always, thanks a lot, Scratch, for your feedback.
